Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, who is standing for re-election in a closely contested race, has pledged to annex about one third of the occupied West Bank including the crucial Jordan Valley.
Any such action would be an appalling act of aggression , contrary to any conception of international law, justice or human rights and it be would a calculated nail in the coffin of any hope for a viable Palestinian State or any kind of peace process. It threatens to ignite further tensions in the already war torn and devastated region of the Middle East.
Unfortunately it is only the latest act in a seventy one year history of war, oppression, displacement and dispossession to which the Palestinian people have been subject by the Apartheid state of Israel.
This act ought to be met by unanimous condemnation on the part of the so-called ‘international community’ and People Before Profit calls for that condemnation, including by the Irish Government. Sadly we know this will not be the case. Netanyahu , himself, has said live on Israeli TV “I am waiting to do this in maximum coordination with [Donald] Trump,” And where Trump goes others will follow, albeit with different language. This is because Israel acts, as it always has done, a watchdog for US and other Western imperialist interests in the Middle East.
In contrast People Before Profit, which opposes imperialism in all its forms, denounces this latest aggression and stands in solidarity with the resistance of the Palestinian people and reiterates its support for BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions).
